From our Cumbrian farm to your garden...
The Natural Plant Food Co is located on our Cumbrian farm on the site of an early medieval castle, adjacent to Hadrian’s Wall. It is home to one of the first scale anaerobic digestion plants in the country.
As well as using anaerobic digestion to export power back to the national grid in the form of sustainable energy for over 2,000 local homes and businesses, we've found a way to create five new 100% natural plant foods and fertilisers as a byproduct of this process.
The process of anaerobic digestion is one where bacteria breaks down organic matter from plants without using oxygen. The substance produced from this is digestate, which is nutrient-rich. Worked on and matured over time, the digestate creates natural feeds and fertilisers that we can all use in our gardens.
Alistair Wannop's family have farmed here since the early 1900s. He says,
“The base ingredients are grown on our Cumbria farm and used to create renewable energy in the form of electricity, which in turn creates the plant food. The beauty of this is that it’s a sustainable and circular cycle as the plant food is then re-used to grow on the farm the following year.
"We're thrilled to have now developed the feeds and soil improver for homes and gardens too."
